While Windows and Macintosh owners continue to squabble about who has the better operating system, Linux continues to gain more acceptance every year. While we know there are many computer enthusiasts that will swear their loyalty to the product, your average notebook or desktop purchased from department or electronics store doesn’t have a version of Linux installed on the hard drive.
However when it comes to business operations, the alternative operating system does have more acceptance, especially with its keen server capabilities. That’s why it’s of interest that Red Hat, in partnership with Trusted Computer Solutions and IBM, have already tendered a release of their Enterprise Linux to the Defense Department for their Common Criteria Evaluation. {mosgoogle} Also vying for the business with the Defense Department is SuSE Linux which has already been through the evaluation process, was purchased this year by Novell and in the last year introduced their new version of SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9. While both the Red Hat and Novell operating systems have much in common, they do have features that are quite different from each other. Both companies are poised to invest money into gaining the government business so it will be interesting to watch the fight.
